Ayşe Polat is described as a German-Kurdish director. She wrote her debut feature Auslandstournee (2000) herself; the road movie, in which a nightclub singer takes an eleven-year-old girl to her aunt in Istanbul, was backed by a television series but shown in cinemas first. In En garde (2004) she told of the friendship between a German teenager and a Kurdish girl awaiting asylum in a Catholic home.
