Born in Iraqi Kurdistan, he lives in Sweden. His trilogy The Girl Who Saved My Life, The Deminer and Sabaya follows the war against ISIS and what the Yazidis lived through: his search for a girl he helped on the way to Mount Sinjar, a colonel’s own footage of years of mine clearance, and the people rescuing women from al-Hol. Sabaya, which he shot and edited himself, won the directing award at Sundance. In A Song for Love he turned to the inner life of a young dervish.
